The YMCA of McDonough County is well known for its quality aquatic programs and has received recognition for their excellence from the National YMCA for many years. The program includes swimming lessons for ages from three years to adult, Parent/Child *Splash Class, various aquatic fitness classes, and lifeguard/instructor training courses. All instructors are Lifeguard, CPR/PR, and First Aid certified. All are trained locally on aquatic instructional techniques, and many hold YMCA or American Red Cross instructor certificates.

Please...Help keep the pool clean and contaminate-free by following these simple rules:

  • Always shower before entering pool or jacuzzi
  • Wear only shoes dedicated to the pool or have bare feet in the pool area.
  • Only toys and floatation devices provided by the YMCA are allowed in the pool

Parent / Child Aquatics

Parent / Child Splash
This water adjustment class is a fantastic way to introduce swimming and water fun to your child. Games, songs rhymes, and other fun activities are used throughout the class while children bond with their parents and socialize with other children. Parents expose their child to developmentally appropriate movements in the water. Participation of a parent or other trusted adult is required. The program adheres to the YMCA Aquatics Program Guidelines for children under the age of three.

This class is offered on Tuesday and Thursday mornings and Saturdays.

Fees: TTH $79/Session (Y Member $31.50/Session)
Saturday: $52/Session (Y Member $20.50/Session)

 

Y Preschool Swim Lessons
Ages three through kindergarten. All levels contain water and boating safety skills, fun water games and activities, and rescue skills. Swimming skills are developmentally appropriate and progressive. All strokes in the developing stages are listed as alternating, symmetrical, and/or rudimentary, instructional flotation devices (IFD's) will be used.

Levels are PIKE, EEL, RAY, and STARFISH. Classes are 30 minutes in length, and are two days per week or saturday mornings. Each class has a limited enrollment of five children/instructor.

Fees: MW or TTH: $92/Session (YMember $36.50/Session)
Saturday: $59/Session (YMember $23.50/Session)

Fees: Two Week Sessions $71/Session (YMember $28/Session)

Youth Aquatics
 

Y Youth Swim Lessons
For children who are in first grade and above. All levels contain water and boating safety skills, synchronized and wet ball skills, and rescue skills. All strokes in the developing stages are listed as alternating, symmetrical, and/or rudimentary. Further stroke refinement occurs at each succeeding level. Both age and skill ability will be evaluated in grouping participants.

Levels are POLLIWOG, GUPPY, MINNOW, FISH, FLYING FISH, SHARK, and PROPOISE. Classes are 45 minutes in length, and are offered two days per week or saturday mornings. Each class has a limited enrollment of eight children/instructor. Late registration accepted only with approval of Aquatic Director

Private/Semi Private Swim Instruction:
For those interested in learning how to swim or for those who desire to improve stroke mechanics and increase efficiency. Basic swimming mechanics and safety skills will be presented. Progression is at participant's own rate and ability.
Fees for a seven-week session. A contract is required.

Private: $194 (YMember $77.25)

Fall Swim Stroke Clinic
For swim team members and others who are considering joining the swim team. Work will be done on each of the four competitive strokes.

Swim Team
A competitive swim program for those who are able to swim at lease one length of the pool. YMCA philosophy of fun and fairness strictly adhered to throughout the swim season that runs from October through mid-March. In addition to swimming skills, participants develop self-esteem, confidence, time management skills, regard for others, and much more. Fees payable directly to YMCA Dolphins Swim Parents Association. For Members Only.


 
 

Arthritis Foundation YMCA Aquatic Program - Level 1:
An opportunity for people with arthritis to enjoy the benefits of exercise in the water. The program is endorsed by the Greater Illinois Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation. Classes are conducted by an Arthritis Foundation/YMCA certified Arthritis Aquatic Instructor. Class size limited.

Fee: $73 (YMember $29/Session)

Senior Swim - Level 2:
A time for seniors (age 60+) who would like to use the pool for swimming and exercising.

Fee: $4 per class (YMember $1 per class)

Waterobics - Level 3: FREE to Option-Plus! Members
Improve physical fitness through exercise in the water. Exercises will focus on stretching, toning, and strengthening muscles along with an aerobic workout to music. For swimmers and non-swimmers.


Fees: $78 (YMember $31/Session)

Aqua Fit - Level 3+ : FREE to Option-Plus! Members
A water fitness program for you adventuresome fitness seekers! An excellent class for those wanted to eliminate shock on the lower extremities - there's no pounding in the water. Warm-up exercises, deep water running and conditioning exercises, and a cool-down. We have AQUA JOGGERS. Enrollment needed: 7

Fees: $58 (YMember $23/Session)

Lifeguard / Instructor Related Courses (Offered Spring Session)

American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer Challenge Test
Designed for those who wish to challenge test to renew their CPR/PR certification. This is a testing day, not a teaching day. Includes both skills and written test. PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED (A minimum of three days prior to test). Bring your own pocket mask.

American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI)
For those wanting to become certified to teach all levels of ARC swimming lessons. Must hold current ARC Community Safety or current ARC Lifeguard certification and must be at least 17 years of age. Books available for purchase on first night of class.

YMCA / American Red Cross Lifeguarding
Certifications earned upon successful completion of class include: ARC Community Water Safety, First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Lifeguard, Waterfront Lifeguard, and YMCA Lifeguard. Must be 15 years old at the time of registration (16 for YMCA certification) and be able to pass preliminary swim test. If under 18 years of age, must also have parental consent to participate in the course. PARTICIPANTS MUST ATTEND ALL CLASSES, PASS ALL TESTS, AND DEMONSTRATE THE MATURITY TO PERFORM THE DUTIES OF A PROFESSIONAL LIFEGUARD. Participants will need to have ARC and YMCA textbooks and a Pocket Mask, all of which will be available for purchase on the first class meeting. Class limited to 30 participants.

American Red Cross Lifeguard Challenge Test
Involves both written and skills test in the areas of First Aid, CPR/PR and Lifeguarding. This is a testing day, not a teaching day, It is not necessary to hold a current certificate to attempt the challenge. PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED (a minimum of three days prior to test). Will need books and pocket mask.

American Red Cross Lifeguard Review Course
This course is designed for those who have held old Lifeguard Certification and wish to receive instruction and skills practice to update to the most current ARC Lifeguard certification. Must pass all written and skills tests, First Aid, CPR/PR, and Lifeguard to receive certification. Must pre-register. Will need books and pocket mask.

American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor
For those wanting to become certified to teach ARC Lifeguard courses. Must hold current ARC Lifeguard certification and be at least 17 years of age. Books available for purchase on the first day of class. Offered during April and early May.
